Google Authorship Markup and How It Affects Your Blog

Google Authorship Markup and How It Affects Your Blog

Now is when you should be paying attention to the Google Authorship Markup and how it can help you.  Google is the top search engine, and having a more personal approach to your posts is how you are going to get more traffic, not to mention the results it will bring you as far as SEO goes.

The Google Authorship Markup and What It Is

So in 2011, Matt Cutts announced that Google would be attributing Google Authorship Markup to claimed and verified blog writers. Since that time the blogging has evolved to a better scope of writing.
The simple story of what the Google Authorship is comes in place of an image, usually the author of that particular post. This allows the reader to see a more personal approach to the blog owner. That’s the easiest way to explain it. A picture beside of your post.
For example, I usually write posts and articles that help newbie’s write better or get more traffic socially. Since I have written a lot of posts in these categories the content I have written has established me as a trusted author on these topics. Once people get to view a great post, and it actually helps them, the next time they see you, it will help them to recognize you. I don’t know if that’s a legitimate statistic or not, however, I have had people tell me that before.
So here is what my Google Authorship Markup looks like when you search for a post similar to this one.

Why Google Authorship Markup Is Important

Well, for one thing, you need to keep up with the rest of us. Keeping your blog up to date is a good thing and this can help you get noticed even more than before by doing this. Like I said before, people will start to recognize you when you do this. It gets your face out there and people will remember you when they see you commenting on someone else’s post or even on a social site! It basically gets you out there.
I’m no SEO genius, but of course having this helps your ranking as well.  As you will see, I did a search online about the CommentLuv Premium plugin and mine was the 5th post on page one.  It definitely has its perks when you verify your authorship.
To have the Google Authorship it actually forces you to be on a social site. You probably already know this, but the social site I’m talking about is called Google Plus, and it’s taking it’s users by storm.
People have reported friends and family members missing only to find out that they had holed themselves up in their room while on G+. It’s really addicting.
So in order to have this Authorship verified, you must have a Google Plus account.
The Steps For Google Authorship Markup
My good friend Ian has a great post about how to set up your Google Authorship, and its all the same anywhere you go. So I’ll just go ahead and show you the steps that you need to take in order to get your pretty little picture on the search engine!

Step #1- Make sure you’re on Google Plus
This is the whole point of this tutorial.  If you’re not on Google Plus, then you’re going to have a hard time getting this to work.

Step #2-Linking your website to your Google Plus account

Ian has a great tutorial for doing this for your Blogger account. The one I am fixing to show you is for WordPress users.

What you want to do is edit your Google+ account to show everyone where your website is. When you click “Edit” scroll down until you see “Contributor to” like this:

The very top one is the blog you are on.  You can use a keyword that you want to promote your site.  I don’t know if that helps, but it sure can’t hurt!
The next thing you will do is go to your WordPress blog click on Users->YourProfile and from there copy and paste your Google+ account URL in the box like so:

Step #3- Downloading the Google Authorship Markup plugin

This is pretty straightforward.  Just download the Google Author Info plugin and upload it to WordPress.  Once that is done, its a simple task of just clicking a button.  Here is the way I have mine set up.
Once you download and activate the plugin, go to Settings->Google Plus Author the very top question will be “Replace author link with the Google Profile URL?” You will click that tab to say yes.

This is really going to benefit you a lot. When you verify yourself and get this Google Authorship Markup stuff complete, you are on the road to a more successful blog, a blog that shows integrity and trust.
